Having been a mail artist for the past 20 years has shaped me as the collage maker that I am today. I have been trained in analog photography and still use my darkroom occasionally. I find beauty in small discarded patches of colour, graphics or images. I work with rescued found paper, old and new, photo’s zines, old books, stamps,… I often incorporate dried natural elements when it comes to collage.
I find it very satisfying creating new images out of two or more cut-out parts. It is a daily adventure to stop the time while creating a new balance in colour and form. Resulting in a totally new readable image. The result often falls into place after the finishing touch and is therefore very satisfying.
The process itself of looking for paper, puzzling them together, looking for coherence and finally fitting them together, is very slow but impulsive.
I compare it to a kind of ‘stream of consciousness’ when writing but then in a visual manner. The images resulting in 'one -of -a -kind’ or in ‘series’ are readable as a story or else as a personal interpretation.
